As I began writing my article for this month’s edition of The Garlic Press, I knew I wanted to talk about October being National Co-op Month. It’s a time to remind ourselves that co-ops enable people to work together to build businesses that are rooted in and accountable to their communities. And so I would, I had assumed, provide the litany of reasons why the Cedar Falls Food Co-op will be, once the doors are open, a great asset to the community.

If you’re excitement for fall and Halloween is dampened by concerns over the amount of processed candy handed out to kids, join in the Teal Pumpkin Project to help provide safe and healthy alternatives on Halloween night.
Did you join us for the Sweet Corn Meet? Kara from Three Pines Farm featured a caramel corn ice cream with sweet corn brittle & it was to die for! 100% of the non-members in attendance joined at the event & we are excited to welcome them to our family!
Check out the winning recipes below, as well as the herb dip Luann Alemao made during her Cooking with Herbs class.
During the day, I have the privilege of working at a local nonprofit. I love what I do. Don’t get me started talking about it! But I also love volunteering as president of the Cedar Falls Food Co-op. As one of a growing legion of Founding Owners, I’m just one voice, so I rely on hearing from other member-owners for perspective. (Seriously, send me an email (email@example.com) or give me a call (319-830-3742) whenever you have questions, ideas or suggestions.) Beyond hearing from other member-owners, I also rely heavily on my fellow Co-op Board members. They are an amazing group!
The air might be getting a little chilly but that’s no excuse to hide inside. Check out all the great activities happening in the Cedar Valley during September.
There are so many fun things going on with the co-op this month it’s cRaZy!! As I’m sure you read in our newsletter already, we are transforming our business partner of the month program into our business partner program to include the many businesses that have opted to partner with us for different lengths of time. As we round out 2015, we’ll still have a few monthly offerings.

Back in April, I wrote that the Cedar Falls Food Co-op had begun making preparations to hire our first position. Well, our work is complete, and we are now accepting applications for the Outreach Coordinator. This is a part-time contracted position that will focus on membership recruitment for the Co-op. We are very excited!
As we near the 250-member mark, the Cedar Falls Food Co-op is now poised to begin our next phase of growth, a phase marked by key milestones. In addition to the first hire, we’ll be working with a consultant to help us complete our market and site analysis. Very exciting times indeed!
Please help us spread the word. If you know of someone who would be a good fit for the Co-op’s Outreach Coordinator position, please pass along the details!
